K-Pop Comeback Review

From first-gen legend Kangta remaking his song to Rain collaborating with the likes of Monsta X, Ateez and Brave Girls, last week was wild. So, for this week, we are taking it slow literally and figuratively with very few releases, primarily of romantic OSTs and ballads. But there are sprinkles of experimental tracks like synth-pop and rock thanks to AKMU and SURL’s releases.

Ha HyunSang – Still Wonder {You Are My Spring OST}

‘Still Wonder’ is sung completely in English as Ha HyunSang tells us about the romance between the main leads. Their love seems to be too true to be real as the two wonder whether it’s just a dream. Full of soft-pop instruments, the OST has a simple melody that brings HyunSang’s heavenly vocals to the forefront. The highlight is the backing female vocals that you can’t help but notice as he flawlessly harmonises with it at a lower register.

Apink’s Hayoung – Couple {Starting Point of Dating OST}

Apink’s Hayoung covered the first-gen group Sechskies 90s hit song ‘Couple’ for the K-Drama ‘Starting Point of Dating.’ It’s a peppy track with a catchy beat as we are regaled with Hayoung’s sonorous vocals. As she sings about the world becoming vibrant after finally finding one’s soulmate, it perfectly represents the love story of the lead couple as the girl accidentally falls in love while searching for meaning in one’s life.

AKMU – Battlefield (Hey kid, Close your eyes) ft. Lee Sun-hee

AKMU’s much-awaited collaborative project album gave us a sneak-peek of what to expect with the pre-release ‘Battlefield (Hey kid, Close your eyes)’. It starts off as a mellow indie-pop song with retro synths that does nothing to prepare you for the emotions that build up while listening to it. The music video follows a group of kids playing with guns in their backyard as a way to have some semblance of control in this messed up world before the last man standing returns back to reality.

SURL is an indie-rock band that released ‘Beside’ after almost a year. It’s one of the first songs that the band worked together when they debuted and holds much meaning as they seemed to have poured all of their personal experiences into it. The track resonates with those who have had a secret crush as it’s full of soft guitars and reverberating drums creating a dreamy ambience.

Ailee – Snow Flower

Cyworld BGM 2021 is a project that has roped in artists like Gaho and Soyou who will be remaking the top 100 songs that were once popular on Cyworld’s platform. And Ailee has decided to do a cover of a cover. ‘Snow Flower’ was an iconic Japanese song by Mika Nakashima that was remade as an OST in 2004 by Park Hyo-shin for ‘I’m Sorry I Love You.’ Ailee’s version is a fresh take on the ballad as she shows off her textured voice majorly accompanied by a piano.

Kim Jaehwan – Promise You {Voice 4 OST}

Known as the king of emotional OSTs, Kim Jaehwan does not disappoint with his latest OST ‘Promise You.’ We get a dynamic range from calm and relaxed vocals to layered echoes as Jaehwan sings about promises the characters of ‘Voice 4’ tried to keep and ended up breaking. His falsettos in the chorus and the sudden pause before he starts the next verse leave us just enough time to collect our emotions before he again dives into the heartbreaking masterpiece.

Sejeong – Baby I Love U

Former gugudan member Sejeong released her take on the Japanese song ‘Baby I Love U’ by TEE. Produced by Iconic Sounds, it has a playful arrangement perfect for a bubblegum pop song. Sejeong plays around with the flow as we see her quicken and then slow down the tempo that makes them the highlight of the song. The piano and the drums rising to a crescendo right before the chorus paves the way for the cute chorus full of ‘I love yous’. Void of intricacies, it is a simple cheerful song that one can listen to in any situation as it’s bound to lift your mood.
